For my thesis I want to create something related to the LGBT+ community and the art of drag. Drag used to be a very “in person” art and business form. You would go to a club and you’d see a drag queen perform. 12 years ago that changed with the TV show Rupaul’s Drag Race. The show went on to become a massive hit, winning over 30 Emmy awards, becoming the reality show to most win the prestigious statuette, and amass millions of viewers world wide. The show, along with the creation of instagram and social media takeover, made drag into a very much digital art form. But it wasn’t until the pandemic that Drag had to learn to go fully digital and remote. Local queens who would get paychecks from tips at bars had to adapt to make digital shows and resort to digital tipping. New platforms for drag shows were created. To hop on this trend I would like to use my technological skills Ive learned at ITP and do something related to drag and technology. However I am not sure as of yet what exactly ill do. But I know it will incorporate drag and technology,
Write a letter to your 60 year old self
Dear Grandpa Dan,
I hope you are enjoying that retirement fund that I will eventually start for you but have not started yet, cause Im still a student, working part time and not good at saving. But I will start soon! Im also very sorry for your neck and back problems. I take full responsibility for years of bad posture. But now for better news, I want you to remember how hard it was to be a gay kid in the 1990’s and 2000’s. Please appreciate that you live in a world now where people can be gay regardless of their religion and location. I hope you and your sexy younger husband are enjoying your vacations outer space! And Im glad your whole family accepts you now. Remember it wasn’t always the case and be thankful. Also never forget all the people that came before you and even along with you that fought to give you your rights. Its been almost a century since Harvey Milk became the first elected politician and almost century since Marsha P Johnson and Sylvia Rivera protested at Stonewall for the right to live out and proud. I hope you did your part as well to increase widespread acceptance. Not only in the city you lived in America, but in the small suburban town you grew up in Brazil and in even in places riddled in homophobia, like Lebanon, the land of your grandparents. Please do that for me!
